Game Day BBQ Dogs

Posted by: Courtney Whitmore

We all know that hot dogs are a crowd pleaser for game day, but how do you switch it up from the ho-hum ketchup and mustard? Set up a game day BBQ hot dog bar with these tips and ideas paired with great-tasting KING'S HAWAIIAN Original Hawaiian Sweet Hot Dog Buns for the ultimate homegating experience.

To set up the ultimate hot dog bar, gather all your toppings and ingredients. I’ve included mine below for the BBQ bar but you can tailor your flavors to your own choosing. For a few other ideas try a tex-mex bar, Hawaiian style bar, veggie dog bar, or a spicy dog bar. All the toppings I used for the BBQ bar are listed below so you can head to your local Walmart and grab everything you need for the ultimate homegating dog bar.

BBQ BAR MUST-HAVES
KING'S HAWAIIAN Original Hawaiian Sweet Hot Dog Buns
Turkey or Beef Hot Dogs
Cole Slaw
Baked Beans
Barbecue Sauce
Hot Sauce
Crunchy Fried Onions
Relish
Diced Red Onion
Shredded Cheeses
Sliced Jalapenos
Bacon
Spicy Mayo Sauce
Ketchup + Mustard

Use small bowls and dishes to display all the toppings so your guests can build their dream dog to their choosing. You might even give suggestions “menu-style” like the Southern BBQ Dog listed below! Or just let guests top their dog to their heart’s content. No matter what combination of toppings they choose, their game day dog will be delicious on a KING'S HAWAIIAN Original Hawaiian Sweet Hot Dog Bun! Be sure to keep extra dogs hot on the grill because I’m pretty sure the guests will keep on coming back for more. They might not make it to half time!

For a fun decorative element, pick up football style toothpicks to serve in the hot dogs or the toppings. You can also make your own by printing off flags with your team’s colors or logos. Adhere to skewers or toothpicks and you’re ready to go!

The great thing about a hot dog bar is that it’s easy to set up on a small console or side table right in your TV-viewing room! You can even cook the dogs on the stovetop if you don’t have an outside grill area. If you’re headed out to a tailgate instead, just package it up and display on your tailgate table. A “dog bar” is a great way to serve up favorite game day food and allow everyone to enjoy their favorite flavors!

Here’s my recipe for the Southern BBQ Dog! There are countless combos you can create from the BBQ Dog Bar but this is my ultimate favorite.

Southern BBQ Dog
6 turkey or beef hot dogs
1 package KING'S HAWAIIAN Hot Dog Buns
1 cup baked beans
¼ cup barbecue sauce
½ cup relish

1.       Turn grill on to medium heat.

2.       Cook dogs over grill.

3.       Place dogs in KING'S HAWAIIAN Hot Dog Buns.

4.       Top with baked beans, relish, and drizzle of barbecue sauce.

Enjoy game day this fall with your hot dog bar and KING'S HAWAIIAN Hot Dog Buns!
